old barn in the ozarks

******

About me:

My name is Roxann Phillips. I live in a really beautiful part of the Ozarks (well, what part of the Ozarks is not pretty?) where herbs and wildlife abound. Every day I try to remember to give thanks to God for providing my family with this awesome place to live and learn. We have all learned so much about our impact on the earth and how we fit into the ecosystem since we moved here from Louisiana. Before we moved, we never considered how finite our resources are. For example, we had a well for our water and it seemed infinite. The only troubles with water we had were to do with electrical issues, or mechanical issues - not because there was simply no water. Here, we have a limited amount, since our water comes from a spring on the mountain. In the summer, we have to be careful and pay attention to how much water we use each day. We have a 1500 gallon storage tank and in summer it stays about 30% full if we are careful. If someone leaves the hose on, or the the sink faucet dripping, or the toilet running because it didn't automatically shut off when it finished refilling after a flush, we may have to wait a full day to have enough water to wash clothes or take a shower. In the winter, we feel rich with water! It's usually overlflowing at the tank and we wash and shower to our heart's delight.

About the business:

What I am doing with this business, Ancient Earth Wisdom, is to provide a learning resource for people who want to know more about how they and plants can interact. Plants have a lot to offer people, and people have the responsibility and obligation to provide plants a continuing place in the environment. Some plants, like ginseng, has such specific growing requirements that it is very easy to ruin their ecosystem and habitat. During herbwalks here at the farm, we discuss how certain plants need certain conditions to exist - old trees, dense shade, and adequate moisture are so important to the woodland medicinals.

Some people want an opportunity to get up close and personal with plants they hold a certain affinity towards, especially those people who enjoy making and using flower essences. Others, such as writers and botanical artists, can come here to sit in solitude with a plant they are working with.

I make and use herbal remedies to help my family, and livestock, deal with minor and chronic health conditions. Because the laws make it so difficult to share this sort of information, I have to be very careful how I present these things. If you want to know how to use these plants and what conditions they can help, I cannot help you. But if you want to learn how ~I~ use them, and how I apply them to the situations that arise in my own household, I can help you with that. I am not a doctor and do not diagnose nor prescribe. But I can tell and show how I use these plants in my own household and if you decide to use them similarly, well, that is your own choice. I always advise that you do a lot of research. Just because a plant is 'natural' does not mean it is safe. Take for example the common garden plant Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea). One bite of the leaf can kill a person. The chemicals in the plant that make it so dangerous are also those that make it such a healing plant - the glycosides are used by the pharmaceutical industry to make digitalis, the heart medication. Foxglove is 'natural' but it is certainly not 'safe' to use as a home herbal remedy.

Services:

Herb walks, group rate $25/ea
(walks are fairly to very strenuous, see plants growing in native/natural environment, 2-5 hours)

Medicine trail (under construction) $10/ea
(much easier herb walk, along trail planted with various medicinals, 1-2 hours)

Individual Herb Day, $150/ea
(learn to identify, gather, prepare, and use whatever herbs are in season, 5 + hours)

To sit with plants privately, first time $10/ea, then no charge for later sessions unless you need a guide to show you to and from location.
------------
For all activities a 'hold harmless' release is required. The terrain here is rough and our hikes take place in areas fully natural and wild. I cannot be responsible for injuries that may occur through no fault of my own during walks or private sitting sessions with plants.
